I’ve got two issues that I need to talk about: my car and my lunch. Both are in terrible, terrible shape. Issue Number 1: Car Window
My power window no longer works.
I’m that woman – you know, the one you see in the drive-thru lane who you shake your head at because she’s a freakin’ mess trying to get her iced coffee. If you’re not laughing, you’re saying to yourself – “Aw, poor thing. Look at her. That stinks.”
It’s so embarrassing. And yet, when I’m not in my car, I completely forget that I have this constant annoying issue.
But then, as I’m leaving work around lunch time, my stomach gurgles, and I drive to the nearest brightly colored unhealthy store I can find. I hang my head in shame and apologize to the person collecting my money.
I also always lie.
“Sorry, my window just stopped working today.”
I’m sitting on a throne of lies…because it stopped working in September.
So not only am I embarrassed about my car window, but I’m also doing it for unhealthy food. I’m a naughty pregnant Tall Mom.
These behaviors needs to stop. Pronto.
Tall Dad believes that the issue might have something to do with a blown fuse in my car. He’s assured me he will take a look at it before New Year’s Day. If that doesn’t work, then I’ll just have to bring it to the shop – and pay through the nose.
Issue Number 2: Poor Lunchtime
I don’t know about you, but I’ve eaten enough cookies and cakes to satiate my sugar need for the rest of this century. As a teacher, there are the obligatory work/ friend parties and familial gatherings for the holidays themselves, but I was gifted a TON of baked goods before school got out.
So what’s the hold up?
Well, I kept said baked goods in my car, and have eaten them as a lunch on more than one occasion.
My doctor would probably tell me that that isn’t the best lunch for a pregnant woman. Or a human in general.
And you know what? She’d be right.
Cookies, as delicious as they are, aren’t really full of the hearty and healthy things that I need right now. But they are sooooo convenient.
I’ve tried to go food shopping, I even once prepared a salad for school. Then I forgot my salad in the fridge.
For two weeks.
Whatevs – three or 17 cookies could solve that problem.
Needless to say, I haven’t had the salad.
Every meal seems to be filled with junk food, and tons of bagel sandwiches. True, it is convenient. And, god, I LOVE convenience. Bagel sandwiches are probably a BIT more nutritious than cookies (at least there’s a protein somewhere in there) but it’s still not ideal. But, then Tall Dad recommended a new product to which I have become addicted.
What has begun working for me are the Campbell’s Slow Kettle Style Soups. They taste like someone slaved over the stove making them, except all I spend are a couple of minutes reheating it in the microwave or over my stove. Simple and delicious! You can easily pick some up at your local Walmart.
Sometimes I get super fancy, and make myself some fresh cheesy bread to go along with the soup.
It’s perfect for dunking, especially the Tuscan-Style Chicken & White Bean Soup. ( Don’t judge me and my cheesy bread, I have to get the carbs in there somehow.)
Other days I will just reheat the soup and enjoy the stillness of Itty Bitty’s nap time, while I sit in my recliner noshing on lunch and finishing up with a sliced orange for dessert. (Oranges have to do because I finally ran out of my Christmas cookies!)
Soups and stews just make me feel warm and cozy – the way winter is supposed to make you feel.
So even though it’s not yet New Year’s Day, I feel like I’m starting to make some new choices for the new year. Hopefully by January 1st I’ll have a working car window, and I’ll be well onto my way of having a healthier lunchtime ritual.
