If you’re an avid reader of Tall Mom tiny baby, you probably already know that my wife, Tall Mom, had our newest tiny baby!  Luckily, everyone is healthy and happy – and we are starting to get into the groove of having another living being under our charge.  But here’s the rub – how the heck do we celebrate the birth of our child with our family and friends? After much deliberation, we thought the best idea is: The Sip & See.

What the heck is a Sip & See?

Well, it’s simple actually.  It’s a party or get together (usually at one’s house) where everyone can gather and celebrate Mom, Dad, and baby without going crazy.  The baby does NOT get passed around, Aunt Betsy does NOT come up and give a giant smooch on the baby’s cheek while leaving the gross outline of Loreal lipstick, and Uncle Ted does NOT brush up against your beautiful child and suffocate her with the oppressive smell of Brut cologne.

No, no my friends – Mom or dad holds the baby and people get a chance to look and not touch.

So while Mom and Dad hold the baby, the party is all about having good music, good food, good drinks, and being introduced to the newest member of the human race.

Thus, Sip & See.

Invite as many people as you want, or invite just friends.  It’s entirely up to you.

The idea is to not overwhelm your newborn.  He’s already been through a lot by coming into this world, and the very idea of something as harsh as sunlight or Jimmy Buffet playing “Margaritaville” over your sound system in your back yard is already overwhelming enough.

Will it seem rather odd and unfeeling to the rest of your family? Well, maybe.  This idea of a Sip & See is a relatively new concept.  Suffice it to say, especially for the older generation, this was never  common practice.  They are used to the exact opposite.

But, this is not their kid, and they don’t have to spend the rest of the night or weekend with them while they cry and fuss because they were overworked by EVERYONE in your family.  You do.  Therefore, it doesn’t matter what used to happen – it’s all about what works best for your family (and your sleep.)

Here’s another idea to help give the Sip & See perspective – (not to get all germaphobe on you) but you don’t know where your family has been throughout the day.  Maybe they went to the bathroom and didn’t was their hands, or maybe they have really bad dental hygiene, or maybe one of them is wearing that gross old hat they’be been wearing for the last ten years which, by the way, probably hasn’t once seen the innards of a washing machine.  Who knows what kind of crap they have going on?

Do you really want your baby to touch that?  It’s nasty.

I certainly know we don’t want that around our little lass.  We will control all we can control around our tiny baby.  They’re too vulnerable not to be held in the safe environment of your arms.

So, Tall Mom and I will be having a Sip & See at our newly purchased home, in our newly redone back yard.  Not only are we proud of our baby, but we’re also proud of our house too!  We want to show it off in the glory it deserves!  Plus, there’s nothing better than having a barbecue in the back yard during the summer in New England.

We’ll be having burgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, steaks, and maybe even some s’mores for a night cap.  As always, we’ll have lots of drinks to keep everyone hydrated throughout the day and Tall Mom will be relegated to her favorite soda: Coke Zero; because of that whole breast feeding thing 🙂

Don’t forget the fact that she is a mother to a newborn – so the caffeine can help she and I stay awake during the party 🙂

Trust me, the Sip & See is the way to go. It’s a big deal, but it’s also not made to BE a big deal.  That is the perfect scenario for Tall Mom and I.

Now I just have to find that darn Jimmy Buffet CD…..

Speaking of Tall Mom’s Coke Zero – luckily there is a Walgreens right around the corner from my new house and I learned that Coke and Walgreens are offering this great deal for their 20 oz. sodas:

  • Every Wednesday through Friday from 4:00 to 7:00pm, Buy 1 Coca-Cola 20 oz. bottle and Get 1 Free 20 oz. bottle to share! You can load the coupon instantly on the Walgreens app or click here for more information
  • May through July you get 3,000 Balance Rewards points when you buy participating Coca-Cola products when you purchase $10 of participating Coca-Cola products.

Oddly enough, I do a lot of my quick and easy shopping at that Walgreens because it’s close to me, the prices are good, and it’s so easy to get in and out.
